Cowan Pottery
1912-1932
Cleveland, Ohio

Presentation by Steve Schoneck
June 10, 2003

On June 10, the Wisconsin Pottery Association had a presentation on Cowan Pottery by Steve Schoneck.  The thirty eight members of the audience learned about the Cowan Pottery and what made it different from other potteries at that time.  Below are some of the items displayed at the presentation.

Hand Decoration of a Spanish Villa by F. Luis Mora

Wall plaque #750

Details of Pterodactyl handle, attributed to Alexander Blazys from 1927

Steve said it was quite common to have one colored flower frog inside a different colored bowl.

Steve referred to these as Push Pull Elephants.  Designed by Margaret Postgate in 1929 (#840-841).  They appeared to be inspired by the work she did for Proctor & Gamble for making designs out of soap.

Mid-Day by Edris Eckhardt is a large sculpture that was not a WPA (Work Projects Administration) piece.  #6 of a possible 12
