Cowan Pottery
1912-1932
Cleveland, Ohio

On June 10, the Wisconsin Pottery Association had a presentation on Cowan Pottery by Steve Schoneck.  The thirty eight members of the audience learned about the Cowan Pottery and what made it different from other potteries at that time.  Below are some of the items displayed at the presentation.

Medusa vase by Paul Bogatay ca. 1930

Introspection by A. Drexler Jacobson in 1928

Spanish Dancers by Elizabeth Andersen in 1928

Above is the base of the female figure.  A Cowan mark is seen on the right.

Alice Through the Looking-Glass designs by Waylande Gregory in 1930.  These are decanter bookends (E-5 & E-4) were unusual because of their production during Prohibition.

Bottom of vase signed "R.G. Cowan".

Globular vase with ring handles by Viktor Schreckengost in 1931.  Viktor also created the famous "Jazz" bowl which is formally called New Year's Eve in New York City which was sold for $50,000 in 2000.

The dark blue vase in the background sis a Chinese Bird Vase by  R. Guy Cowan, (#747 from 1927).  This design was award 1st prize in Potter at the 1927 Cleveland Museum of Art May Show.

Orange vase in the center is referred to as a Morning Glory vase (#783 from 1927-1931).  The tall blue vase on the right shows the difficult glazing of a matt glaze over a gloss glaze.  The presenter could only think of Fulper doing the same thing.

Swirl Dancer, by R. Guy Cowan, (#720 from 1926).  This design was award 1st prize in Potter at the 1926 Cleveland Museum of Art May Show.
