Cowan Pottery By Steve Schoneck
by Kari Kenefick

In June 2003 Steve Schoneck visited the WPA with a presentation on Cowan pottery. Cowan Pottery was produced in Cleveland, Ohio from 1912–1932 and featured some of the giants in artistry and innovation in the pottery world. A veritable who’s who of pottery, from R. Guy Cowan himself, to artists like Waylande Gregory, Viktor Schreckengost and Thelma Frazier Winter. Although the Great Depression and changes in pottery production worldwide dealt the final blows to Cowan production, the high-quality of the pottery Cowan produced gained for American Art Pottery the attention of pottery enthusiasts the world over.

Many thanks to Steve for sharing his wonderful collection of Cowan Pottery.

Visit the Wisconsin Pottery Association’s August 23rd Show and Sale to see more, or perhaps even purchase your own Cowan pottery!
