1870's First started in the 1870's

1876 Rose in popularity after the 1876 Centennial Exposition because of the display of Cincinnati McMichen School of Design painted porcelain in the Women's Pavilion.

1878 Osgood Art Studio of New York open the first school for china painting.

1879-1892  Several clubs and publications were formed for china painting.

1880  The first "China Decorators" appeared in Chicago Business Directory.

1886 Susan Frackelton patents a portable gas-fired kiln, making china painting more accessible to many.

1893 Columbian Exposition.  The Woman's Pavilion again features china painting.

1894 The start of the "Golden Age of China Painting" .

1896  House Beautiful starts publication and has regular features on painted china.

1901 Worlds Fair in Paris banned American China Painting because they considered it to be amateur.

Early 1900's  The American woman became both the consumer and producer of painted china.

1905  It was estimated that there were over 20,000 professional china decorators in America.

1916  Chicago Business Directory list 100 plus China Decorators

1925 The end of the "Golden Age of China Painting".

1929  There are only 15 China Decorators listed in the Chicago Business Directory.

1976 President Carter declared china painting a Fine Art.
